Stately in size, decadent in its luxuries and rapid in its pace, the 2011 Maybach 62 could be the most exquisite vehicle that money (a lot of it) can buy. Even so, it lacks the overwhelming character and panache of its only rival, the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Maybach 62 Sedan offers the following pros: Premium indulgence; constructed like a leather-lined bank vault; custom-tailored exclusivity; La-z-boy backseats; convenient ride; supremely refined engines. Maybach 62 Sedan drawbacks are: Unwieldy in traffic; too much resemblance to Mercedes; expensive options; not a Roll-royce.

The 2011 Maybach 62 is a long-wheelbase ultra-luxury sedan available in two trims: the Maybach 62 and Maybach 62 S. There are also a regular-wheelbase version known as the 57 and a quasi-convertible known as the Landaulet discussed in separate reviews.

Either Maybach 62 model can be customized with nearly any features the purchaser can dream up, but nevertheless, traditional kit contains 19-inch wheels, an active self-leveling suspension, adaptive cruise control, front and back cab sunroofs, performance back sunshades, 10-way performance front seatings with heat and massage, front-seat memory options, a performance tilt-and-telescoping helm and a full leather dashboard. The opulent back quarters contains reclining back captain's chairs with heating, memory functions, performance leg supports and footrests, folding back picnic tables, electronic back door closers, four-zone conditioning with active air filter and a back beverage cooler. Traditional tech features include front and back Bluetooth controls, a navigator, a rearview camera, a DVD entertainment system and a 21-speaker Bose surround-sound system with an in-dash CD player, a console-mounted Six-cd changer, radio and an optional stereo slot. The Maybach 62 S adds 20-inch wheels with higher-performance tires, a slightly lower ride height, sportier suspension and minor look differences.

Regular auxillary extras revolve mostly around the back passengers and include add-on rear-seat entertainment features, a three-person back seat bench, various front and back partition designs, ventilated front or back seatings, folding back picnic tables and back curtains. Other features include a solar panel module (it generates enough electricity to performance the car's ventilation fan) and a back sunroof layout that can be turned opaque at the touch of a control.
