The Volkswagen Sharan is a modern take on the conventional people carrier recipe, with look-and-feel to match. A strong horizontal grille and clear headlight lenses give the nose a technical look. Viewed from the side, the Volkswagen Sharan is dominated by its big windows, which give the vehicle a less top heavy look.
The Volkswagen Sharan is 220mm longer than its predecessor and 92mm wider, a significant increase in size. Fold down all the back seatings and the load space measures 2. 1 metres long and holds 2297, litres, slightly more than the Ford Galaxy. Changing the positions of the back seatings can be carried out with one hand, and once stowed there is a flat boot floor.
Four versions are available, namely S, SE, SEL and Executive. The first features three-zone conditioning, an eight-speaker audio, Ipod connectivity, DAB radio and a tyre pressure monitor. SE adds a multifunction helm, cruise control, auto wipers, under-seat drawers, fold-flat front passenger bench, front and back parking sensors, Bluetooth, chrome trim and 16-inch alloy wheels. SEL models get sport alcantara heated front seatstinted, back windows, aluminium trim, CD autochanger, front fog lights, panoramic sunroof, chrome roof rails and 17-inch alloys. Aimed at the enterprise sphere, Executive vehicles have six leather seatings with individual armrests.
The Ford Galaxy looks like a large vehicle from the outside, but has a consistent exterior with the smaller, Ford Focus-based C-MAX and sporty S-MAX. Its front is as sleek as Ford's other multi-purpose cars (mpvs) and its back lights give a nod to the Mondeo saloon. It looks as though the Ford Galaxy will be tremendous inside, with its boxy back three-quarters maximising dashboard space.
The amount of cargo room in the cab impresses. A row of cubbyholes running along the centre of the roof offer front and second row bench passengers access to oddments, while on the Ghia model, these stretch almost the full length of the vehicle. There's more cargo on top of the dashboard , in the centre control panel and doors and even in the passenger-side armrest on the third row of seatings. The Ford Galaxy's seatings fold into the floor although not completely flat like the Vauxhall Zafira. Boot room grows from 367 to 2095, litres depending on the number of seatings folded.
There are three models in the Ford Galaxy range: Zetec, Titanium and Titanium X. All models get alloy wheels, parking sensors front and back and a heated front display as well as Bluetooth with voice control. conditioning, electric windows all round and electric adjustment for the driver's bench height are also included. However, you have to specify Titanium trim to get automatic lights and wipers, USB connectivity, a DAB radio and sports seatings, as well as cruise control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and extra cargo spaces. The range-topping Titanium X adds leather trim, a panoramic roof and xenon headlights along with wood trim inserts for the cab.
