The 2012 Volvo C30 dishes out a full plate of style and convenience but doesn't match some of the performance thrills that competitive models provide. Volvo C30 Hatchback offers the following pros: Distinctive styling; firm yet compliant ride; supportive yet convenient front seats; spirited turbocharged motor. Volvo C30 Hatchback drawbacks are: Competitors provide more performance; behind-the-times navigator.

The 2012 Volvo C30 is a four-seat, two-door hatchback provided in two models: the base T5 and the sportier T5 R-design. Every model can be updated with either the new Premier Plus or Platinum trim level that basically groups well-known features into packages for easier ordering.

The T5 contains 17-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable seatings, a trip computer, cruise control, full performance accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping helm with stereo controls, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker CD stereo system with an optional stereo slot and USB input.

The Premier Plus trim adds a performance glass sunroof, performance front seatings, LED daytime lights and aluminum inlays for the dashboard . The new Platinum trim contains the Premier Plus upgrades along with driver bench memory, a navigator and a luxury 10-speaker surround-sound stereo system with satellite radio.

The T5 R-design model features mechanical upgrades to offer more performance, including 18-inch wheels, a quicker steering ratio and a sport-tuned suspension that is 30 percent stiffer. Distinctive look-and-feel cues for the R-design include color-coordinated look trim, a special front grille layout, leather seats, blue-faced gauges, sport pedals and metallic dashboard trim. The Premier Plus and Platinum trim upgrades include the same equipment as mentioned for the T5.

The Volvo C30's Climate suite -- which contains heated front seatings, electronic conditioning, headlight washers and rain-sensing wipers -- can be added to any trim level.
It may cost more than comparatively equipped competitors, but the 2012 Volkswagen Golf sweats the details and offers a level of refinement that few can possibly match. Volkswagen Golf Diesel offers the following pros: Impressive cab materials and construction; economical diesel engine; roomy hatchback body style; refined driving dynamics. Volkswagen Golf Diesel drawbacks are: Unrefined and inefficient gasoline engine; higher price tag than many competitors.

The 2012 Volkswagen Golf is a five-passenger hatchback available in two- and 4-door body styles. Every is broken into 2. 5L and TDI versions, which correspond to motor choice. The high-performance GTI is discussed in a separate review.

Traditional equipment on the base 2. 5L Volkswagen Golf contains 15-inch metal wheels, foglights, full performance accessories, keyless entry, heated mirrors, cruise control, air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping helm, a height-adjustable driver bench, front bench adjustable lumbar, cloth upholstery, a compass, a trip computer and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD player and an optional stereo slot. The Comfort suite adds heated front seatings, a front center armrest and Bluetooth. The Comfort & Sunroof suite adds those aforementioned items plus a sunroof, a Six-cd changer, radio, an Ipod/usb stereo interface and a touchscreen stereo interface.

The Volkswagen Golf TDI contains all of the above equipment as traditional, minus the sunroof. Also included are 17-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a lower ride height, heated windshield washer nozzles, floor mats and a multifunction leather-wrapped helm. The Sunroof & Navigation suite adds the sunroof and a navigator, but subtracts the compass and optional stereo slot. The Tech suite contains the Sunroof & Navigation items, plus bi-xenon headlights and a luxury Dynaudio audio system.
