Birth versions Pajero Evolution occurred in October 1997, when there was a need to update the model for the sport of rallying the Paris-Dakar on norms of class T3. Evolution version came into being with a 3.5-liter 24-valve V-shaped 'six', equipped with two new revolutionary systems: Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control (MIVEC). Upgraded dual combustion chamber allowed to increase engine power, and specially tuned suspension gave the car go more smooth.

In 1998, the model is exported to the world market, has undergone a facelift. The wings have expanded, upgraded headlights, grille, bumper and fog lamps form. The front passenger and driver airbags are installed by default on a model with a 3.5-liter engine. The interior is also upgraded by introducing a diverse leather trim and inserts made of wood. 3.0-liter engine became available not only from the 12th, but with 24 valves. Models without the extended wings, still, were the main assembly line (GLX), and the GLS has a standard 3.0-liter 12-valve engine.
